Dark foods, medications, lifestyle choices (like tobacco use or drinking red wine), and the inevitable process of aging can stain tooth enamel. If you want to look years younger, Dr. Osborn can help. With professional teeth whitening, we can turn back the clock and turn up the wattage on your smile.
To appreciate the benefits of teeth whitening, it helps to understand the different types of teeth stains. You can have either intrinsic or extrinsic staining. Intrinsic stains occur within the teeth and develop because of injury, too much fluoride, or certain medications. Usually, these stains don’t respond as well to whitening, so you may need to consider other options like Porcelain Veneers or White Crowns.
When the enamel discolors as a result of dark foods or other staining factors, the flaws are considered extrinsic. While brushing and flossing can lessen these stains, teeth whitening can make a more dramatic difference. In-office or at-home professional teeth whitening will safely remove discolorations and brighten teeth up to 10 shades.
Dr. Osborn offers Opalescence teeth whitening, a proven, effective home whitening system that can only be purchased through a dentist. Opalescence comes with custom-fitted mouth trays and a potent whitening gel. The trays keep saliva from diluting the gel, and they also hold the solution against teeth enamel. Most people whiten for about an hour a day. Our office manager, Brenda, wears her trays on the way to the office in the morning. Most patients are advised to use Opalescence for a few weeks at a time to achieve optimal results. Keep your trays, and you can touch-up your smile whenever your teeth begin to show signs of discoloration. Just call our office to order more whitening gel.
