If you ask most people, they would rather do just about anything besides get a root canal. The dread associated with root canal therapy often comes from a lack of understanding about the procedure itself. In fact, a root canal is a conservative procedure that eliminates infection, pressure, and pain. It is often the only alternative to extracting an internally infected tooth.
Your tooth has three parts, a hard outer shell called enamel, a softer layer of dentin, and an inner core of nerves called the pulp, which supplies nutrients and blood flow to the tooth. If a tooth experiences serious trauma or deep decay, the pulp can become infected and die. When this happens, pressure builds inside the tooth and can cause a serious toothache.
To save the tooth from extraction, Dr. Osborn may recommend root canal therapy. During the procedure, she will remove the diseased tissue, disinfect the inside of the tooth, fill the tooth with a biocompatible material, and seal the tooth to prevent further problems. After root canal therapy, most patients need a white crown to protect the tooth and restore function. For mild soreness, you may take an over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
