Preventing disease is the best philosophy for maintaining a healthy body, but putting that idea into practice requires dedication and commitment. Because studies have proven that oral health can impact overall health, quality of life, and wellbeing, it’s important to take an active role in keeping your gums and teeth healthy, and this includes prioritizing preventive dentistry. With periodontal maintenance (cleanings or gum procedures), Dr. Osborn and our hygienists can help protect against gum disease, a serious condition that can lead to bone degeneration and tooth loss, as well as more severe health issues like osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.
Good homecare habits and routine dental visits form the cornerstone of dental disease prevention. Then, at your six-month dental checkups, Dr. Osborn and our team will examine your mouth for decay, disease, and any other concerns. We offer a full menu of preventative dental services, including dental sealants, fluoride, mouth guards, eSplints for bruxism, and oral DNA testing. We will review your medical history, take X-rays if needed, and clean your teeth. Your complete oral health assessment will involve periodontal analysis, tooth-by-tooth inspection, and oral cancer screening. The doctor will also evaluate your occlusion, or how upper and lower teeth fit together. She’ll talk with you about your concerns or any discomfort with your mouth.
Because problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer can damage your oral health and, ultimately, your overall health, we want to address these problems before they escalate. Dr. Osborn will discuss her findings and offer tips for securing and preserving your optimal oral health.
You also need a periodontal cleaning every six months, and if you visit our office regularly, we can schedule your checkups and cleanings for the same appointment. During a cleaning, our hygienist will assess your gums and remove plaque, tartar, and debris from your teeth. Six-month cleanings allow us to keep your mouth healthy and fresh, and you’ll be more likely to avoid gingivitis and gum disease. At your cleaning, the hygienist can also answer your questions about dental care, home care, and oral disease prevention. She can also demonstrate easy, effective flossing and brushing techniques to help you improve your daily oral homecare.
