Sometimes, subtle cosmetic changes, like smoothing sharp or jagged edges and filling in gaps or chips on teeth, can transform a person’s appearance. We call reshaping teeth by removing tooth structure “recontouring.” Adding to tooth structure to fill gaps or chips is called “bonding.” For more extensive issues, Porcelain Veneers, White Fillings, or White Crowns may provide better results. However, as a conservative dentist, Dr. Osborn often recommends contouring or bonding, which require minimal tooth reduction (if any) and usually take just one appointment.
Contouring involves gently removing a small amount of tooth enamel to reshape the tooth. This procedure is helpful for smoothing sharp canine teeth or serrated-looking edges. It can create a softer, more esthetic appeal for a smile.
Bonding uses the same composite material that’s used for tooth-colored fillings, and we tint it to match your existing teeth. Dr. Osborn will mix the compound and then apply it to your tooth, working with the material until it creates a natural-looking restoration. She will then harden the surface with a curing light. Though bonding won’t last indefinitely, you should enjoy about 10 years before you need any rework on the area.
